10 Keys for effective worship leaders (5)

1. Submission to the Leader

2. A Lifestyle of Prayer

3. Preparation

4. A Lifestyle of Obedience

Todays Key:

5. Excellence

This is a big one.

I often hear people saying things like “that’s good enough” or “It doesn’t have to be perfect”. We have to be very careful with that attitude. We must always remember we are representing the Kingdom and God always gives us His best. We should offer Him no less than our best.

Excellence does not mean perfection and means something different in every context. What is excellent for your church could be completely different at the church down the road.

It means representing the Kingdom as well as possible with what you have. Offering our best is an act of worship in itself. Everything we do should be well thought out, well prepared, so we will represent the God we serve in the best possible way.

This could go several different ways. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this idea.

10 Keys for effective worship leaders (4)

1. Submission to the Leader

2. A Lifestyle of Prayer

3. Preparation

Todays Key:

4. A Lifestyle of Obedience

What I’m talking about is obedience to God and His word.

In John 14:15 Jesus says if you love me you will keep my commandments. It’s a comment about fruit similar to saying if your healthy you will have a temperature of 98.6 degrees. John 14:15 is talking about obeying the the Word. those things that are known, written down.

In John 15:14 Jesus says you are my friends if you do whatever I command you. He is referring to hearing His voice. Do what I tell you to do.

If we are going to be effective in ministry of any kind we must have a lifestyle of obedience both to His Word and to His voice.

Blessings,

10 Keys for effective worship leaders (3)

1. Submission to the Leader

2. Lifestyle of Prayer

Todays key:

3. Preparation

In almost 25 years of leading worship the complaint I hear most is “I hate it when I come to rehearsal and the leader isn’t ready!”.

What they are talking about is being prepared administratively which is huge but not the only preparation I’m talking about.

First administrative.

When our team arrives at rehearsal everything shoul be ready to go. Charts prepared, recordings available, what ever you need to rehearse. We should have already worked through the set and know where were going. What the transitions are who is starting each song, what happens in the song etc. etc.

Second spiritual.

When I started in sales I was told:

Sales is 90% people skills and 10% product knowledge and you have to know 100% of the 10%

The same is true with spiritual preparation It’s 90% spiritual and 10% practical and you have to know 100% of the 10%. Make sure you are prayed up, that you have heard from God about what He wants to do in the service. Pray for your team, the music, the transitions, the scripture, what you should say. Pray for the congregation, the pastor, the MC, MD, don’t leave anything to chance.

If you only have time to do one of these two things prepare spiritually but don’t make it a habit of only leaving time for number two.

Blessings,

I like checklists.

Looking for lists can be a bad thing. People were always asking Jesus “what must we do?” looking for the list of things to check off so they would be “ok” with God.

However lists can provide an effective way to organize our thoughts and to audit our performance. Over the next 10 days we will look at some keys in no particular order. Practical and Spiritual items will be interspersed.

1. Submission to the leader

People ask all the time; “when is it ok to not submit to the leader in the service?”.

The answer is never. “but what if they’re not hearing the Holy Spirit?”

The leader, whether the Sr. Pastor or the delegated M.C., for the morning will be accountable to God for how they led. You are accountable for how you served and submitted. Chapters 11-14 of Romans talks about order in the church. God cares about order. Psalm 133 says where there is unity God commands a blessing.

This applies outside of the service as well. If the Sr. Pastor wants a particular song and you feel like it doesn’t fit with what “God told you” do what the Sr. Pastor asks (with a joyful heart). God will bless you for keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:3

I look forward to your comments and additions to the list.

Rebellion as Staying Put

The Jesus Manifesto is a blog that always makes me think, I don’t always agree with them however a big shout out to Matt Wiebe who posted this article last week. I couldn’t agree more.

The money quote:

mobility begins to look a lot like slavery, while stability begins to look a lot more like freedom than I would have imagined. True freedom isn’t a lack of limits, but rather an embrace of the limits intrinsic to our nature as embodied creatures. We are always located somewhere at some time. And I plan to stay long enough in one place to make a dent.

1 Corinthians 12:18 says “But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.

You don’t get to choose where you go to church. He sets each one of us in the place best suited for us to serve and grow into the fullness of our calling. How many times do you think people who have built something significant have wondered if “it’s time to move on”. Longevity matters. Persevere until God releases you. It’s worth it.

Well done Matt.

The Greatest

Muhammad Ali called himself the greatest,

When asked what great means, he responded;

“Great is never looking down on those that look up to you.”

Jesus said if you want to be the greatest you must be the servant of all.

Let’s all compete to see who can be the greatest this year.

It’s impossible to just tax the rich.

Thomas Sowell : Taxing Times

Another great article by one of our most articulate conservatives. Ask yourself the question; who owns the company I work for? and where would I work if that person or persons decided it wasn’t worth the risk anymore.

Chief Justice John Marshall said it all in one sentence: “The power to tax is the power to destroy.”
It is not the money that is taxed away that is destroyed. What is destroyed is the wealth that does not get produced in the first place,

Why do I need to be planted in the church?

Sorry I’m so full of video and not much substance lately. I am working on a serious post which I hope will be up today sometime.

I saw this last night. It’s amazing and a great illustration of the protection  we can expect when we are planted in the church.  Hope you enjoy it.

glenn packiam’s blog: A New Kind of Leader: Why We May Have It All Wrong

I think Glenn nailed this one. As followers we must give unconditional submission, not unconditional obedience, God gives us permission to disobey for only one reason. As leaders this article is right on the money. Below is Glenn’s conclusion but the whole article is worth a read.

As a new testament leader this should be our guiding principle. The greatest must be the servant of all.

A leader is one who demonstrates God-given authority by serving others and earning their trust.

Your authority comes from God; your leadership comes from trust.
